Facilitator Workshop Agenda Guidelines:

Guidelines

This agenda highlights the key features of the workshop and provides suggested times for each element. The sequence of presentations will be modified to fit the days and times that a state schedules for the workshop.

Length

A facilitator workshop requires 16 hours of contact time to complete. Please note the reason for the varying times of Sessions 1 and 2. In order to achieve the following goals, we believe the participants should experience a minimum of 10 lessons.

Goals

To prepare to serve as an FLP Educator Workshop Facilitator by:

Becoming familiar with:

  • FLP's Resources for Learning
  • the Project Food, Land & People Facilitator Handbook
  • state program and organization
  • FLP's paradigm
  • process skills and critical thinking orientation
  • theme and technique integration

Seeing lessons as:

  • supplementary to traditional subject areas
  • complementary to other projects and curriculum

Developing trust in the Resources for Learning:

  • create a comfort zone
  • use of and extent of supporting information
  • step-by-step instructions with integrated questions
  • evaluation opportunities and extensions

Room set-up

Rectangular (6') or round tables with 5 people per table, arrange 6' tables in fan shape
Overhead projector and Screen setup so participants can see screen
Flip chart
Six additional 6' tables for registration, handouts and resource materials

Presenters

There is a time alloted during Sessions 1 and 2 for individuals to be invited as guest speakers. This may be one individual using the time, two individuals sharing the time, a farm couple, or a panel of producers or specialists, probably three maximum. Although it is preferable to have them present during the time when these sessions will be occurring, we can generally work them in anytime after the icebreaker and before the closing. If they can join us for a meal in addition to their presentation, this would be an added bonus.

We definitely want one of these to be a farmer, rancher, nurserygrower, farm couple, or panel of producers who will discuss her or his operation and those things that influence her or his operating decisions. Part of this time should be allocated for questions and answers.

The other presenter may speak specifically about the theme of the session or may introduce the participants to other materials that they can incorporate into their curriculum that complement the agricultural or environmental literacy theme. They may also bring materials that supplement one or more of the FLP lessons, such as insects. We have used professors, extension agents or specialists, and farmers

Be creative in selecting these individuals rather than fitting a mold. Their job is to expand the workshop and help the participants realize that the FLP material is only a springboard to other opportunities. We have also found that many participants have not had the opportunity to interact with an agricultural producer wearing her or his producer hat and that is why we encourage having at least one producer.

Breaks

Breaks and meals are scheduled at appropriate times during the workshop. If the workshop includes meals, the menu could offer meals from different cultures.

Journaling

We will schedule two to three additional short blocks of time for journaling during Sessions 1 and 2. This is an important learning method and a critical part of the workshop format.
